Nyack Homeless Project, Ltd. started ten years ago as a spontaneous idea among a group of friends that wanted to give back to others in need. They made sandwiches and handed them to homeless people in NYC parks, living under Federal Highways, and in children’s group homes during the winter holiday season. Each year the project spontaneously grew, adding children and teenagers to remind them of a world that lives beyond their video screens. In 2005 NHP became a non-profit organization in the State of New York.

NHP volunteers begin raising money and receiving donations after Thanksgiving from generous businesses, restaurants, communities, schools, and individuals to make sandwiches, donate baked goods, winter clothing, and give financial aid. All donations are prepared on Dec. 24 and delivered on the morning of Dec. 25th to homeless people in Manhattan and in Rockland County.

On Sept. 11, 2005 the NHP raised $1600 in one day, and with a matching donation to American Harvest, and donated funds for distribution to survivors of Hurricane Katrina at: Star of Hope Mission, Houston TX; Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Shreveport, LA; Houston Charity Center, Houston, TX; and Dr. Walter Ernst Veterinary Memorial Foundation, Baton Rouge, LA.

This year NHP, with the help of many schoolchildren, raised over $8,000 in financial donations and gathered an overwhelming abundance of boxed food, sleeping bags, blankets, and winter clothing to feed and clothe over 2,500 people at: Jornaleros Day Laborer’s Project, Spring Valley, Helping Hands of Rockland, Christ Church, Suffern, Nyack Soup Kitchen – Rockland County. Peter’s Place, Olivieri Woman’s Space, Grand Central Neighborhood, Open Door, Neighborhood Service Center, New Life Community Health Center, Ali Forney Center – New York City.
